It can be really easy to get caught up in the day to day life and begin to feel sluggish and run down. Spice up your routine with a couple pas de bourree in your kitchen or at a local dance class. Here's six reasons dancing is good for your health.
IT'S A GREAT CARDIO WORKOUT
Dance improves cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, muscular endurance, body composition and muscular strength. An activity like running on the treadmill may improve cardiovascular endurance and body composition, but an activity like dancing can actually target those two as well as muscular endurance and flexibility. And that’s on top of improved balance, agility, coordination, power, reactivity and speed!
We've said this before and we'll say it again. If an exercise is not enjoyable you're not going to be able to keep doing it. Dancing is, plain and simple, fun in the way a monotonous treadmill run probably never will be. Plus, busting a move can trigger the release of feel good hormones like serotonin and endorphins.
IT CAN BE A SOCIAL ACTIVITY
Busting out the moves in the kitchen to your new fav tune feels good, but there's something irresistible about dancing with other people, whether it’s with a partner or a class-full or club-full of fellow booty shakers. Get some people together and get your body moving.
ANYONE CAN DANCE
Dance is great because it's inclusive. Not all fitness activities are some people feel like they don't have a certain skill set and feel embarrassed. Anyone can start to dance and enjoy the experience. If you're embarrassed to dance in front of other people- start out in your living room-moving to a song you just can't resist! There is a dancer in all of us!
IT CAN KEEP YOUR MIND SHARP
Learning new routines, memorizing and counting steps requires a certain level of brain power. So it comes as no surprise in several studies dance has come out as being an activity that keeps your mind sharp.
IT'S GENTLE ON THE BODY
The beauty of dance is the movements are rarely repetitive. You can constantly change the motion in which your body moves targeting a range of different muscle groups. Unlike more traditional cardio exercises that are structured and vigorous, dancing is more free knowing you can always slow down at any time.
IT CAN IMPROVE YOUR BALANCE
As we get older keeping our balance gets harder. Putting on your dancing shoes can help. You work deep core muscles throughout any style of dancing, which increases your stability and sense of balance. It's also great for full body strength, you'll work muscles when you're dancing you didn't know even existed! - Yes to that!
